Press release:

Odds and Ends is pleased to present its inaugural exhibition “Something Blue”, a group exhibition featuring works by artists Peter Chan, Corn Ho, and Lewis Lau. The exhibition will run from April 14th to May 29th 2022, with a gallery opening reception on April 14th from 4 to 8 PM.

The colour blue is associated with a wealth of connotations that differ by culture, carrying with it a rich history and great emotional power. In Western art history, blue has always been synonymous with royalty and divinity, evident by the sacred association of the Virgin Mary with Marian Blue. In Chinese culture, particularly areas surrounding Southern China, Cobalt Blue is considered an inauspicious colour that is reserved for funeral ceremonies. Yet for some, strategic incorporation of blue hues in one's life can improve your Feng Shui. While the cultural connotations of the colour blue can at times seem endless and contradicting, one thing remains certain about this elusive pigment—it is a brooding symbol of introversion.

Blue is often used to describe a state of melancholy; “feeling blue” is commonly used to convey an inexplicable emotional state triggered by nostalgia. As an emotion, melancholy's most distinctive aspect is that it involves contemplation, providing an opportunity for indulgent self-reflection. In art, such contemplative state is often evoked by the use of the colour blue, whose association with the human psyche goes beyond mere metaphor. Through the works of three emerging Cantonese artists, Something Blue explores the pensive power of blue and its role in our aesthetic consideration of artistic narrative.

Toronto — From October 29-31, Galerie Youn and I are pleased to present new works in solo booth A34 at Art Toronto 2021 this year. These new works are part of a body of work titled 'The Twilight Hours'

For inquiries and a full e-catalogue of available works, please contact me or info@junoyoun.com

Press release:

Continuing from his previous series, 'For the Love of Gold', Chan is exploring the history of interactions and of commerce, in ‘The Twilight Hours’.

Chan looked to F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel 'The Great Gatsby' for inspiration. Fitzgerald's characters represent the American dream in the 1920s. The rising commerce of advertisements, magazines, billboards, radios and newspapers paralleled Fitzgerald's observation of the inevitable commercialization of love, romance and the human heart.

It was the “roaring twenties” of accelerated economic growth that juxtaposed narcissistic wealth against abject poverty. Chan also draws the parallel of our own “roaring twenties” of high-speed technology.

Chan is interested in the decadence and absolute extravagances within Fitzgerald’s themes of class, idealization, gender, superficiality vs truth and loss of love.

In ‘The Twilight Hours’, Chan explores the fantasy of this world. The rose-tinted glasses are replaced with a veil of gold. One subject even wears glasses beneath his veil. Chan, like Fitzgerald, folds us into his world and from there we can look out through a golden sheen, our vision bathed in twilight and a blaze of sunset glory.

In Ideals and Traditions, Chan explores critical themes of East Asia inspired by his recent visit to Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan. Through the autobiographical documentation of imagery around him, he distorts and recomposes imagery to form compositions that allow for new narratives and meaning. This body of work documents and analyzes themes of superstition, identity, popular culture, traditions, and gender ideologies.

Chan uses a mix of contemporary figures to form new stories by re-introducing them with both historical and contemporary locations. Historical East Asian artifacts are also re-introduced as Western still-life paintings.
